THE WORD
FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 55:1-5
The Messiah is commissioned to call the nations into the mercies promised to David. The invitation is one of pure grace. For we had nothing to offer God (“no money”) and our entire natural life could
not pay for a morsel that could satisfy the needs our soul.
PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 42-43 on page82
Believers confidently anticipate the restoration of fellowship with God after a time of turmoil and separation.
SECOND LESSON: Romans 8:35-39
Normally, we would be powerless against persecution, famine, nakedness, danger or sword. But none of these things, in fact, nothing
in all creation can separate us from God’s love. God is on our side.
GOSPEL: Matthew 14:13-21
Our Lord seems almost oblivious to the looming problem of feeding a large crowd in such a remote place. After the disciples assess their meager resources, the Lord of creation gives thanks and produces more than enough to satisfy the crowd.
