ORDER OF SERVICE: The Common Service, page 15ff
THE WORD
FIRST LESSON: 1 Kings 19:9-18
After the victorious face-off between the Lord and Baal on Mount Carmen, the prophet was dejected by the thought that he alone followed the Lord. Souls are not converted through mighty acts of judgment. Hearts are converted through the gentle gospel whisper.
PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 73 on page 94
We may lean totally on the Lord for security and happiness forever.
SECOND LESSON: Romans 9:1-5
St Paul has a pastor’s heart for his own people. The apostle wishes he could take their place under God’s judgment. God forbid that we should despise the richer blessings of the New Testament fulfillment.
GOSPEL: Matthew 14:22-33
The sight of Jesus walking across the water towards their boat terrifies the disciples. Jesus’ words dispel their fears. The arm of the almighty is never too short when little faith trembles.
THE SERMON: Genesis 29:14-27,31-35
THEME: Leah, the Second Wife
