THE WORD
FIRST LESSON: Exodus 6:2-8
“The Lord” is the title that describes God as the God of the covenant …the God of independent and faithful grace. The Lord is more fully known as He fulfills His promise in delivering His people from their enemies, setting them apart for Himself and guiding them to the promised land.
PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 34 on page 80
We can praise God for the care and protection He provides His people.
SECOND LESSON: Romans 11:33-36
God’s wisdom can turn mankind’s disobedience into an opportunity for mercy. No wonder the apostle breaks forth into a hymn of praise! Only the unsearchable wisdom of our God could have thought of this!
GOSPEL: Matthew 16:13-20
Human reason cannot consider Jesus to be any more than a prophet—the forerunner of the Messiah at best. Peter, on behalf of the other disciples, confesses that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” On this bedrock confession the entire church of God is built.
